QUESTIONS

What does wildness mean to you?

A sense of unencumbered freedom to explore, feeling the elements, looking up at expansive skies, and finding rules to be broken. The curiosity to see what naturally emerges.

What first drew you to Wild Mosaic?

The idea that I could adopt a piece of land that I knew would be rewilded and contribute to something bigger. It’s a great way to have a tangible impact. I’m also obsessed with maps of all kinds - so being able to choose my own tile and see exactly where it was located on the satellite image of the site map was very appealing!

I had a dream about 3 years ago: I was climbing a steep rock face poking out of the sea, not far from shore - the Earth was barren. I got to the top of the rock face, close to the clouds, glanced back at the land and decided I had to go back. I jumped off the rock and flew towards the shore (it was a vivid dream!) and, with a brush of my hand, made the land green again. If only it was that simple ;) But I see Wild Mosaic as the hand bringing life and nourishment back to the Earth - just on a different timeline to my dream.

Can you describe your relationship to your tile?

I’m very fond of my tile. I wanted a spot on a hill because I love to take in the views wherever I go - I always seek out the local viewpoint when on holiday. When Jon sent a drone shot of my tile last year, I could see it has two halves - what was once sheep pasture is now half bracken and half long grass, which I thought was unusual - it’s like a line has been drawn through it. I must ask Jon if it’s still like that. The 360-degree views from my tile are pretty special - I could spend many hours there.

I also treated my Dad to a tile for Father’s Day last year; his tile is in a different spot to mine - down by a stream surrounded by buttercups in the Spring.

And how do you bring more wildness into your life?

I’ve created a “nicely wild” garden - that is how my sister describes it. It’s only small, but there are plenty of nooks and crannies for wildlife to feel safe. We created a pond last year, and this Spring four newts and a damselfly nymph have made themselves at home there, along with many snails and a host of larvae that I have become an expert in identifying! Before I start work each day, I sit in the garden and observe - what can I see, hear, smell, feel - and I write my observations in my journal. It’s a lovely way to ground myself each morning. And when I need a screen break, I pop over to the pond, where I often see the newts gobbling up the mosquito larvae. The pond is only one square metre, and the life that has found its way there is amazing!

SPECIAL QUESTION: If you could be a ‘Wild Thing’ what would you be?

My first thought was to be a Butterfly - the epitome of transformation - spreading joy, wonder, and hope. But then my favourite animal is an Otter - for their playful nature and inquisitiveness. The Oak feels like family - my maiden name is Ogden, which means Oak Valley. And Fluent by John O’Donohue is one of my favourite poems about living as a river flows. So perhaps my Wild Thing would be a “scene” - the River flowing through the Oak Valley, with Otters playing and Butterflies resting on the bank.
